Cycling Statistics
London Cycling Performance
Every quarter TfL publishes a Performance Report. This includes estimates of total cycling in Central London based on a counts a key sites and using a novel, unpublished, metric. Despite misgivings about the metric, it is interesting to analyse this data as it gives us the most up-to-date picture of cycling levels in London. Data is now available for 18 quarters covering Jan 2014 to March 2019. Analysis shows steady but small increases in cycling at around 3% per year.
Whilst these increases are welcome news, they are nowhere near enough to achieve the aim of the GLA strategy of increasing journeys in London from 654,000/yr in 2014 to 1.5 million in 2024/5. Even if we get compound interest-type growth we will only get half way to the target.
Analysis of the TfL data is in the excel sheet below.
