Do it yourself advice
Lots on YouTube. For example this long video, you can jump around to find the relevant bits.
Good series of articles on the ParkTool site
Where can you get a bike fixed for free, or at low cost, in the Southwark area of South London?
This is an ongoing programme of events where a qualified cycle mechanic will chack your bike and do small repairs for free, for example fix punctures, renew brake cables. Will advise about more difficult repairs. At present Southwark Cyclists are doing two sessions each month. First Thursday, 5.30-7.30pm, in Peckham Square (near Peckham Pulse and Peckham Library). Third Thursday, 5-7pm on Quietway 1 at Dunton Rd/Lynton Rd junction. Sessions will continue until October 2018. Check Southwark Cyclists Events Calendar for further dates.
Bike Maintenance Workshop with Tuition
Run by Southwark Cyclists
These workshops are brought to you by some of the same guys who run our summer-time Dr Bike’s. We have to stop when the weather gets cold and they get bored, their fingers (still warm) start to twitch and they long to carry on fixing bikes.
Result: a series of winter-time workshops brought to you jointly by Southwark Cyclists and Lettsom Tenants and Residents Association (hereafter TRA) to operate in the TRA hall on the first and third Tuesday evening of every month up to and including March 2019.
The whole shebang is free and everyone is welcome. Kids are welcome too but must bring an adult. You will need a bike or bits of one if you want advice on assembling the rest. No state of decrepitude beneath consideration. The team like a challenge. They carry small parts but if the wheels are missing you will have to buy those yourself.
The TRA are providing the tenants hall which is at 114 Vestry Road SE5 8PQ, between Peckham and Camberwell. Like all estates the numbering and street names can be quite a mystery so that may not be sufficient to find it. The only way found to describe it so far is that it’s just up the hill from the parade of shops, and then down a passage. Bikefix, Burgess Park
The Community Cycle Workshop has bike fixing sessions on 2nd and 4th Friday 4.30pm at present. Location is Burgess Park (Albany Rd), behind the Adventure Playground, near the BMX track. Aimed at young people, but older family members welcome. You get to use their workstands and tools, and get free advice from mechanics. Details here or check Facebook for up-to-date info and other locations.
Lewisham Cyclists Mend and Ride Bike Workshop
Mend and Ride is Lewisham Cyclists’ cycle maintenance project. It is a workshop space with a good selection of tools, and advice and help available from our volunteers plus a qualified bike mechanic. It is not a bike repair shop, it is a space where you will be helped to mend your own bike, getting it back on the road while learning the skills to keep it there.
There are two sessions a month. One is usually on the last Sunday of the month from 11.30 on the Sunday to 3pm held at the Ringway Centre, 268, Baring Rd Grove Park SE12 0DAOn the second Sunday of the month, we also hold sessions in Deptford at Ron Hoskins Hall (the Scout hut) in Childers St Deptford, SE8 5NU. This is on Quietway 1 and currently runs 10am to 2pm.
Check LC events diary for the actual dates as, very rarely, they might have to change them.
There is no set charge, but they do ask for a donation from those in work, for the help and use of tools, plus they do have to charge for any parts supplied.
