Antonio Marchesini - "Tony"
Tony was killed by a car on June 3rd 2018. As Philippa said, it hits hard when it is someone you know. Tony had been a regular on the Healthy RIdes for over a year. He was always helpful to whoever was leading, for example looking out for traffic at busy junctions. Clearly an experienced and careful cyclist who used his bike as a main means of transport. In fact I had discussed with him the possibility of his leading some rides.
The collision occurred on Quietway 1, at the junction of Rolt St and Childers St in Deptford. Given the road layout it is hard to see how the collision can have occurred. Tony was very unlucky. Useful reports in the Evening Standard, https://www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/deptford-hit-and-run-horrified-witnesses-saw-bike-dragged-200m-along-the-road-after-fatal-crash-a3854461.html and https://www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/londonbased-it-worker-knocked-off-bike-and-killed-in-hitandrun-a3862686.html
We will send a letter of condolence to Tony's family in Italy with some photos. Have put the photos below of Tony taken on Healthy Rides.
Really upset about this. Makes me even more determined to do what I can to improve road safety, especially for cyclists and pedestrians.
Tony Marchesini's killer jailed for 8 years
Tony died after being hit by a car in June 2018. The driver ran away but was later apprehended and charged. At the trial in October 2019 evidence told that the killer had a long record of violence. Report of trial here and also in the Evening Standard.
