Report Connect 2 Steering Group, 4 Dec 2012
Attended by Bruce Lynn and Alastair Hanton
Everyone very happy to see the bridge from Stubbs Drive to S Bermondsey Station in place. Work on approaches under way. Official opening planned for late Feb 2013.
Rest of Connect 2 route now being completed with various small obstacles being removed. Problem with crossing of Rotherhithe New Rd south of bridge (on current LCN21). This links through to Ilderton Rd/Surrey Canal Rd and is part of Connect 2 and is important until we get a path directly on from the bridge (more on that later). The Toucan crossing planned to replace the pedestrian light-controlled crossing is not going to happen; we will continue to have to use existing crossing.
The figures for the Portrait Bench are now fabricated and are with Conways, the contractors. So as soon as the location is settled, the bench can be installed. Bryn Lockwood (Sustrans) hopes we can have some sort of unveiling ceremony in Spring 2013 (separate from the bridge opening).
Work is to start shortly on the Toucan crossing of Bush Road on the Surrey Quays one-way. A scheme for better signage for the Lower Rd crossing is in hand.
Peter Stunell (Lewisham Council) reported that the developer for the Millwall site (Renewal) was not at present doing anything, so he thinks getting the path from the bridge past the stadium and up to Surrey Canal Rd is at least 5 years off.
There was a discussion about "legacy" - what we can do to implement schemes that were "dotted lines" on the Connect 2 proposal, and some of the things pointed out in the South Bermondsey routes document prepared by Bruce. Bryn said we should put a big section on legacy in the report that would be written to coincide with the end of the contract and the bridge opening.
Alastair pressed hard at the end of the meeting for definite consideration of the next steps on cycling routes in the area, building on Connect 2. This will be a big list, including not only the South Bermondsey routes, but also a cycling and walking bridge across the Thames linking Rotherhithe to the north bank. So, very ambitious, but good at this time of political enthusiasm for cycling. To help this legacy process along, we agreed that Cllr Alan Smith, Cabinet Member for Regeneration in Lewisham, would be invited to the next Connect 2 Steering Group meeting, in March 2013.
